Highlights from the 2011 Conference on Diversity, Inclusion & Engagement. Sept. 22, 2011

Val Boston board member of the DCC offered the following tips for how jobseekers can show employers that they have the emotional intelligence they're looking for:

  • People who have been unemployed for awhile have likely been on an emotional roller coaster. Their frustration with their job search has turned into desperation, which may have them being a "Debbie Downer."
  • "Negative Nancy" is not going to get hired in most situations. Most employers are hiring attitude firs, not so much skills.
  • When people are on the spot, their nerves can get the best of them and they talk too much. ....We should be listening twice as much as we should be talking.
  • Jobseekers also need to be able to take a hint by reading body language.
