Discovering Diversity, Celebrating Humanity LOCATION: Diversity describes the uniqueness of individuals, cultures and relationships. Through diversity, we learn, we share, we understand and we thrive. The goal of the Diversity Council of the Carolinas is to educate, inspire and promote change in the workplace. The DCC believes that that a more inclusive business community makes a stronger workplace. It all comes down to treating people as individuals, to appreciate that within difference is a common humanity and shared struggle. About the speaker: Mary C. Curtis Mary C. Curtis is an award-winning writer and editor based in Charlotte. She is national correspondent for AOL’s PoliticsDaily.com, a contributor to National Public Radio, TheRoot.com and Creative Loafing. Her “Keeping It Positive” commentary airs every Wednesday morning on “Fox News Rising” Charlotte. She has worked as a columnist, editor and/or writer for The New York Times, Charlotte Observer, Baltimore Sun, Arizona Daily Star and the Associated Press. A 2006 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, Curtis is a contributor to the Nieman Watchdog Web site. Commentary venues also include: CNN, MSNBC, Essence.com, EbonyJet.com, Heart & Soul magazine and the Washington Post. For her work, Curtis has been honored with Green Eyeshade Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for political reporting of the 2008 presidential campaign and cultural criticism, two first place awards from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), and awards from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, National Headliners, the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors and the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association. She won the Thomas Wolfe Award for an examination of Confederate heritage groups. Curtis was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Region IV NABJ in 2004. She serves on the executive board of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Academic Internship Program and is active in Women’s Inter-Cultural Exchange and other community groups, as well as in ministries at St. Gabriel Catholic Church.
